Remember Where True Authority Begins

May 25, 2026 | Authority | Romans 13:1

God is a God of order, not confusion, and throughout Scripture, He establishes authority to guide, protect, and care for people. Whether in the home, the church, or government, authority is meant to reflect His character by promoting peace, justice, and wisdom. While human leadership is imperfect, believers are called to respect and pray for those in positions of responsibility, trusting that God ultimately remains sovereign over all things.

Romans 13:1 reminds us, “There is no authority except that which is from God. The authorities that exist have been appointed by God” (BSB). This does not mean every decision made by leaders is righteous, but it does remind us that God is still in control. He can work through leaders to provide protection, provision, and stability, even in difficult times.

As followers of Christ, we are called to live with humility, wisdom, and discernment. Respecting authority does not weaken our faith—it demonstrates trust in God’s greater plan. At the same time, Scripture teaches us to stand firmly for truth and righteousness whenever human authority conflicts with God’s Word.

When we place our confidence in God above all else, we can walk in peace knowing He reigns over every earthly power.

Prayer for today: Father, help me respect and pray for those in authority while keeping my trust firmly in You. Give me wisdom, discernment, and peace as I seek to honor You in every area of life. Amen.
