Start Here Before You Speak Out

Throughout Scripture, God places deep value on listening. Long before Isaiah said, “Here am I. Send me!” (Isaiah 6:8, BSB), he first stood in awe before the Lord and heard His voice. Before Samuel delivered God’s word to Israel, he learned to pray, “Speak, LORD, for Your servant is listening” (1 Samuel 3:9, BSB).

In a culture that prizes quick opinions and constant noise, the discipline of listening feels rare. Yet the Lord often shapes His servants in silence before He sends them to speak. Jesus Himself modeled this rhythm. He frequently withdrew to lonely places to pray (Luke 5:16). The Son of God listened to the Father before ministering to the crowds.

When we rush to speak without first seeking God, our words may reflect our emotions more than His truth. But when we pause, open His Word, and quiet our hearts in prayer, the Holy Spirit aligns our thoughts with Scripture. Listening cultivates humility. It reminds us that God is the source of wisdom, and we are His vessels.

If you desire to share hope, encouragement, or correction, begin in stillness. Open your Bible. Ask the Lord to tune your heart to His voice. The opened ear prepares the opened mouth.

Prayer: Father, teach me to listen before I speak. Quiet my heart so that my words reflect Your truth and bring life to those around me. Amen.
